My Op-Shop Find

I have a Vinnies (St Vincent de Paul) op-shop around the corner from home and I finally managed to find time to have a peek inside. Oh my, I think I will be a regular. The shop front is a tiny narrow thing but once inside it’s like Mary Poppins bag – inside it just keeps on going.

Anyhoo, I was sans child and spent a wonderful time rummaging through things, and look what I found.

This gorgeous hand appliquéd and embroidered table cloth with 4 matching napkins. The work is exquisite. The appliqué is done with tiny, tiny blanket stitches – probably about 2mm apart. I can’t begin to imagine the amount of work went into this and here it was at the bottom of a basket in Vinnies.

The saddest part of this is the price tag - $6. I can only imagine that this linen was given to Vinnies as part of an estate. The maker’s relatives not realising that they were giving away a family heirloom and bundled it with the rest of the linen.

Well, it now has pride of place in my embroidered linen collection and will be loved for a long time to come.

It's gorgeous, I am a great lover of Vinnies and have got a couple of amazing bargains recently including a Javi Lounge with matching chair!

Are you enjoying the heat? Ghastly isn't it.

HI Emma, Looke great. I would love to know how to do this. I have started basic sewing class. My next project is a quilt from left over material. Is this type of thing hard to do??

Great find. Donna.

Donna - this level of this appliqué (which is what the flowers here are) is of a very high standard, but appliqué itself is something that simply requires practise. If I was learning appliqué I would use other techniques to make it easier on myself - but the result would be similar.

Be warned - quilting can be addictive.

Greenfumb - We have been away for the past few days and thankfully have missed some of the really hot days. I can't imagine it ever being cold enough again to put on a jumper.

notesfromthefrugaltreches.com - thanks for commenting. I had to share this beauty.

Isn't it tragic what some people will throw away? Someone poured their heart and soul into that.

Vinnies is the place, though, isn't it? I get a lot of clothes and stuff there!
